Not cupcakes but I hope you'll like them just the same.
[ She hadn't been nervous when sending the initial text but now she is. What if he doesn't like them? Maybe she should have tried her hand at them. But cupcakes are tied to a fake memory. Whatever this is, she'd like some part of it to be real. ]
[ But she did. Because she was his mom and she remembers the important things when everyone else either didn't know or had forgotten. And maybe this will be his own way of knowing what it's like to have an actual birthday. ]
i'll be there in a bit.
[ And sure enough, Tech heads over -- wandering toward the kitchens and wrinkling his nose at the wall decor in passing. The hotel really could be an eyesore. But he spots Kate and tucks his hands in his pockets with a single nod. ]
[ The feelings that she has for him still remain. It's fake. It was fake. She knows that but she doesn't want to eliminate them entirely. Other people might think her insane and maybe she is. ]
I know but I wanted to. I'm trying to get back into baking and I thought you would like these.
[ Without thinking about being her which is why she didn't bake cupcakes. She knows that eventually she'll try them again but not right now. It's too soon. ]
Okay. See you then.
[ The kitchen had already been close to clean when she has first texted Tech, no Aindreas. While waiting, she finishes tidying. His present is already in a box with a bow on it. Why a bow? It's a present. Presents are meant to be unwrapped. And if he had never had a birthday before, she wants this to be special. ]
Hi. [ She smiles in greeting and then turns to her side. She picks up a plain white box and presents it to Tech. Inside, are a dozen and a half sugar cookies that she has decorated with icing and more icing to look like circuit boards. She thinks it appropriate for the God of Technology. ]
I hope you like them and it's totally fine if you don't but... Happy Birthday. Or Happy Unbirthday if you prefer.
[ His eyes go to the gift, complete with a bow and everything. He stares at it for a while as though he's not sure what to do. Aindreas wouldn't have hesitated to accept a gift because it's the polite thing to do, but for Tech it's unusual because no one had ever gifted him anything before. So he approaches and swallows a lump in his throat. Well aware of how her eyes burn into him, he knows he has to open it.
He tugs at the bow and pulls open the lid of the box to peek inside at the sugar cookies. The details awe him. She put so much thought into this. Tech fights to smile and show his appreciation, except there's just this overwhelming emotion coming over him that leaves him wanting to cry instead. ]
They're...they're perfect.
[ He finally says once he's managed to regain control of his emotions and he steps forward to draw her into a hug. ]
I can't believe you did all of this for me. It's just...no one ever has, and...fuck. Thank you. They're definitely instagram worthy, which is the highest of compliments.
[ Kate doesn't recall ever being so nervous about someone liking what she's baked before. Before she had just assumed and had known that people would like her treats. She had been good at baking.
And so she watches him open the box, both worry and hope on her face. But the worry soon vanishes. She is so happy that he likes them. ]
You're welcome. I'm so glad you like them.
[ She returns the hug. She needs it. She wonders if he needs it too. ]
You said you had never had a birthday before and I thought that was sad. Everyone should have a birthday and a present. I wanted to do it.
[ Is she going to cry? Not quite but she is going to get misty-eyed. ]
