IC Info

Name: Technical Boy
Canon: American Gods
Age: Ageless, but appearing in his early 20s.
Appearance: GIF. His appearance is constantly changing, but his s2 style is the most enjoyable.
Canon Point: 3x10 "Tears of the Wrath-Bearing Tree" After he's left imprisoned by Mr. World
Background: American Gods is a series about the many gods who were brought to America and now struggle to survive in a place where very few, if any at all, believe in them. As the old gods try to find their way in the world, new gods have arisen. One such god is Technical Boy who is the living embodiment of technological advances. He's had many different incarnations over the years, but this current incarnation of Tech Boy came to be in the age of video games. As a young boy finds a new obsession with the latest consoles (from atari to gameboy), his father wants him to play and value music instead. Eventually this boy marries the two worlds by creating a computer program that can write music similar to Bach -- giving the program permission to 'shatter the rules' and create variations in musicality. From this program, and to the credit of this true believer, Technical Boy is reborn.

Somewhere along the way, Technical Boy gets roped into working alongside Mr. World and Media, trying to prevent a budding war from happening and maintain dominance as the new gods. Inevitably, Odin -- the main problem on the old god side succeeds in forcing them to declare war and they have to build their forces from there.

Now grown up, the one responsible for Tech Boy's creation has become a CEO of a company called Xie comm. Tech Boy spends most of season 2 failing the tasks Mr. World sends him on and after his failure with Argus, he decides to visit the CEO and call in a favor -- needing a major surveillance system put in place to replace the god of 'many eyes.' The CEO is only interested in what Tech Boy can show him. And when he fails to show him anything new, the CEO loses his faith and Mr. World walks in to tell Tech Boy how he has now become irrelevant. Hurt and betrayed, Tech Boy goes to flee but the building locks him in and he gets ported into a face grabber (essentially a virtual reality headset) and "deleted."

In the end of the season, we find out he's been upgraded to a new version by this same CEO. At first, he seems rather emotionless and cold, incredibly robotic. But at the start of season 3, we find out that this upgrade was a failure and the original Technical Boy has returned. He visits Bilquis to try and recruit her for battle on their side, and she speaks to him about the terrors of war and touches him -- giving him a flash of something, perhaps a memory, that fucks him up and causes him to glitch out.

He spends most of season 3 trying to find out what's wrong, and it's revealed to him that he's developed a subconscious and is starting to feel emotions. He glitches when he tries to repress the emotions. In order to fix himself, a diagnostic had told him to find something called 'artifact 1.' So Tech Boy soon discovers it in the basement of Mr. World's company building. It appears to be an old tool, perhaps a flint -- one of the very first pieces of technology.

When Tech Boy touches it, he has flashes of all the various forms technology has taken. Then World enters, telling Tech Boy he's older than he actually realizes and how every time technology evolves, Tech Boy evolves with it and forgets who he is. He claims he's vital, a bridge between the old world and the new -- there can be no progress without him. And so, World traps Tech Boy in an energy field while making artifact 1 disappear -- leaving Tech Boy imprisoned as he walks away, whistling a haunting tune.

Personality: Douchebag, hipster twat. Personality section done. Haha, nah. Seriously, though -- Technical Boy is a relatively new god on the god spectrum. Because all he has ever known is constant praise, worship, and admiration with the state of and reliance on technology in the modern world, this has caused him to be arrogant -- to believe himself to be irreplaceable and all that society really needs. He is as irrational and unstable as some wifi connections, his moods shifting between cocky confidence and outright aggression. This makes him both unpredictable and dangerous.

Technical Boy is very out with the old and in with the new. Every time we see him, he has overhauled and changed his entire appearance because technology, like fashion, is constantly changing. He is obsessed with staying as current and ahead of the trends as he possibly can be. Along those same lines, he cannot fathom why they don't simply eradicate the old gods because to him they are completely irrelevant.

Although Technical Boy can be impulsive, he is also highly intelligent. He was aware Wednesday was recruiting old gods before the war began, and he also predicted said war. He can see the moves and guess the outcome. Like a computer, he searches for the logical but least human solution. Wednesday's going to war, so they need to kill him before he can. He doesn't see the value in recruiting him the way Media and Mr. World want to. Yet whether it's a grudging respect or because he owes the other two gods something, Technical Boy does listen to their wishes.

Otherwise, his demeanor is very millennial. (He vapes synthetic toad skins for crying outloud!) But Technical Boy is confident to the point of arrogance, entitled, narcissistic, and attention seeking.

All in all, Technical Boy is an amalgamation of technological advances, worship, and something very human. Up until season 3, these more human parts of him had been locked away. Now he is experiencing the stirring of empathy and he absolutely hates it. Fighting against this part of him has caused him to become glitchy. And until he accepts emotions, he will continue to experience glitches.

Weaknesses/Temptations: Power will be a BIG temptation for him. Technical Boy craves worship, so he will be doing whatever he can to accumulate some sense of power in hell -- no matter how many people he has to kill or torture to get there. He's also got an insatiable thirst for knowledge, so any chance to get more information, no matter what he has to do for it, will be a big draw.

Sins: pride, wrath, envy, murder, attempted murder, criminal hacking, betrayal, arrogance, thirst for power, exploitation, apathy for the lives of others, drug use, selfishness, entitlement

Powers/Abilities:

Always Connected: In the series, Technical Boy has been shown to basically be the internet -- always connected with a vast array of knowledge just a thought away. Because this is hell and it makes sense for the WIFI to be crap, Technical Boy will only be running at half capacity. While he would normally be able to hack into anything tech related, he'll find this a challenge here. He will be sluggish and have to spend extra time resting to recharge his 'drained battery' so to speak. On the flip side, other technological devices should run a lot smoother when he's around -- basically connecting to his personal network and running off of him.

Technopathy: He can communicate with technology, bend it, alter it, recreate it or control it to his design. The older it is, though, the harder this will be.

Digital Creation: Tech Boy can summon what he refers to as 'the children' which are digital, faceless thugs who he uses as the brawn to enforce his goals. In hell, though, this ability will be EXTREMELY limited as it likely requires him to run at full capacity. He may be able to summon a couple, but they will come out glitched or like holograms, for example.

Regeneration: He can turn himself into pixels, both at will and because of glitches. These pixels allow him to regenerate from injuries he suffers...but again, because of his slow connection, his regeneration will be much slower here.

The Touch of God: It was also shown once that he can basically send an electric shock into someone else and rip data from their mind. Using this skill will be an explosion of power and probably leave him weak and vulnerable afterward.

Replicate: Tech has the ability to split himself into two and use each other to upload data, basically. This was a part of his failed upgrade, but because it's not quite explained (and canon got cancelled without finishing. Grr), I will say the current version of Tech Boy is something in between the updated, emotionless version and what he was before that. Which means if he tries hard enough, he can still split. But because of the energy output, it will leave him SUPER drained and probably leave one half of himself unstable.

Items: A headgrabber (basically a virtual reality headset), his vape pen, a defunct mobile phone with charger (he can still play some games/listen to music on it, though), wireless earbuds, and two unique and colorful outfits with geometric patterns.

SAMPLES

Network: [ And we're live. The Technical Boy is seated on his bed in his room, communicator in one hand and the newest uPhone in the other, distractedly playing one of those mindnumbing mobile games. Every once in a while, the sound effects chirp, chime and serve as background music. His room's been redecorated in geometric decor and a roomba goes zooming by on the floor. ]

24.45 hours studying this network. And I'm bored.

[ Implied: You're boring. ]

You guys are practically gods. Granted, that's a lowercase G. But still. Your power here goes unmatched and all you can do is sit around talking about restaurant recommendations and dating sims? How about we have some real talk.

[ His thumb blurs over the screen of his uPhone, taking just a minute to beat the level with an air of superiority. Everyone can wait for him to make his proposal because he's definitely more important. And once the victory fanfare sounds, he tosses the phone to the side -- for the first time giving his full attention to the camera. ]

You're the old models. The old generation of imPorts who are just waiting to be made anew. So here's where I come in.

[ A beat. A smirk. A drag off of his vape pen. ]

Let's talk Upgrades.
